Welcome to 6th Grade Orchestra!

Updated 3/26/2020

I hope that everyone is doing well and staying safe. Due to our Illinois Shelter-in-Place order, I've added music for our spring concert here for you to download. If you need help with any of the music, please let me know. If you email me I can reply faster than a Google Classroom message.

  • My Google Classroom code is f7p67mg if you would like to connect with a device at home.
  • Here is a copy of my e-learning checklist. There are instructions on the sheet and on Google Classroom. 2020_6th_grade_Orchestra_E-learning_practice_checklist.pdf
  • You can always reach me with the Remind app on your phone. Text @6orch122 to 81010 to receive updates or contact me directly. If it doesn't work for your device, email me and I can add you.

Another thing to consider. SmartMusic is an app that puts our concert music on your computer or tablet screen so you can play along with an orchestra or even change the tempo. If you want to be included (we have access to the upgraded version for free), you'll need to click on the link above (it will open a new tab), then copy & paste the code: W462W-GPCJU and add your email address. Once you do that, send me an email and I can upgrade the account so you can choose any music from their library to download and practice.

Welcome Letter

In NLSD122, 6th grade orchestra is the second year of study for our young musicians. Students participate in a 30 minute sectional and two morning rehearsals each week.

As students develop their skills, we also have more opportunities for performance. In addition to our two regular school concerts (December & May), 6th grade students can participate in the Illinois Grade School Music Association Solo & Ensemble contest, where they can perform as an individual with a piano accompanist or play a duet, trio or quartet with other orchestra students. This opportunity will occur in early February.

New for 6th graders this year, we are also going to participate in the IGSMA Organizational contest in March. This contest will be for the entire group. We are rated and receive comments by three judges and will get to have a short clinic with one of the judges. The ratings are based on age level and difficulty of music played - so we essentially compete against ourselves. Last year the Martino students participated in this for the first time and really enjoyed it, so I felt this was a fitting opportunity for the 6th grader students too.
