Joining Band & Orchestra
It's NOT too late to sign up for fifth grade band & orchestra! We begin playing in the fall of fifth grade.
No experience necessary!
How do I choose my instrument?
For incoming 5th graders you can choose from the following instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone Horn, Tuba or Percussion.
Here are links to videos to help you choose. Please note that they may demonstrate instruments that aren't available for incoming 5th graders, but you may switch to later.
The U.S. Army Field Band demonstrates the following instruments: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium (Baritone Horn), Tuba & Percussion. There are time links to specific instruments in the video description.
The Portland Youth Symphony had students from each section put together demonstrations a few years ago. The link below starts with the flutes, but there are time stamps for each instrument in the description.
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra Kids site has links with descriptions and sound files for many instruments, including ones you can play in 5th grade.
How do I sign up?
If you are in 5th or 6th grade signing up for the current school year (2019-2020), please call me (Mr. Torbett) as soon as possible for information.
If you are interested in information for the 2020-2021 school year, we start that process in April of 2020.
Step 1 - Demonstration Concert - Sometime in the middle of April
Fourth grade students will see the Martino band & orchestra in a concert at Spencer Crossing. Students from Bentley are bussed over to S.C. to view this concert. This is a great way for students to hear what the instruments sound like and see what they can achieve with practice!
Step 2 - Demonstration Day - Last week of April
Mr. Rinke (band) & Mr. Torbett (orchestra) will play instruments for each 4th grade class at Bentley and Spencer Crossing. Students will hear and see the available instruments up close to get an idea of what they sound like.
Step 3 - Tryout Day - First week of May
Soon after hearing Mr. Rinke & Mr. Torbett, you'll have a opportunity to come and try out the instruments. Have a good idea of which ones you want to try as you'll only have a short period of time to hold each instrument.
Step 4 - Talk to your Parents
This is a very important step. At this point, you've decided which instrument you like. Now you have to talk with your parents about the commitment of playing in a group. We practice twice a week before school and once a week during school. You'll be expected to play your instrument at home 15 each day.
Step 5 - Signup Night - First week of May, at Martino Junior High from 5pm to 8pm
This is where you and your parents will meet the directors and talk to a rental company about renting an instrument that will be delivered to your school next fall. Representatives from Quinlan & Fabish Music Company will be present to discuss rental information and rates.
