My name is Karen Smith and I am so excited to be at Tyler Elementary! This is my first year at Tyler but not my first year in the district. Last year I was a para at Spencer Trail and Reach. I have also subbed in previous years, in addition to working at Spencer Trail and Oakview. Before working in NLSD 122 I taught first grade in District 161.
I earned two degrees from Purdue University. One in Psychology and the other in Elementary Education. I also have a Master's in Reading from Governor's State University.
I love spending time with my two sons. Evan is a junior at Lincoln Way Central. Nate is an 8th grader at Martino Junior High. Both are involved in many extracurricular activities where we spend most of our evenings.
Anything Pete the Cat! He is one of my favorite characters because this groovy cat shows us that no matter what life throws our way, we can always choose to look for the good in ourselves and in every situation! Other favorite authors include Mo Willems, Eric Carle and Doreen Cronin.
I love to travel and explore new places. Some of my favorite places to visit are Michigan, Arizona, Hawaii and Ireland. When I have spare time I enjoy being with my family and friends. I also enjoy reading, working out and going for a walk with my collie named Cubbie. Yes, I am a Cubs fan and my favorite player is Javy!
