The Role of the School Social Worker
School Social Workers are part of the special education team. We participate in special education meetings and assist with assessment of students. We communicate with and act as a resource to students, families, and school personnel. Essentially, School Social Workers work with general and special education students in order to identify and resolve social, emotional, or behavioral issues that interfere with a student’s learning. This is done through assessment, participation in special education meetings, consultation with parents/guardians, school personnel, and community providers, and also implementation of behavior management plans. School Social Workers help to support student social, emotional, or behavioral needs in order to help students be as successful as possible.
