5th Grade Orchestra

First Rehearsal:

September 16th, at Liberty Jr High School. @ 7:00am

Rehearsals take place Mondays and Thursdays each week. You will need to drop off your child at Liberty Jr. High School in the morning. After rehearsal, your child will be bused back to their school. 


Instruments and Rentals:

Instruments are rented through Quinlan and Fabish, refer to the information below about specific rental info for each instrument. 

Violins and Violas:
  • Rent your instrument from Quinlan and Fabish to be used for home, rehearsals, and lessons.
  • Students are expected to bring instruments to and from school for rehearsals, lessons, and home practice.
  • We do not provide instruments for rehearsal or lessons.
Cellos:
  • Rent instrument from Quinlan and Fabish to be used at home.
  • Students will be provided an instrument at school for use in rehearsals and lessons.
  • Students are not expected to bring their home instrument to school for rehearsals or lessons.
Basses:
  • Rent instrument from Quinlan and Fabish or District 122 for home use*.
  • Students will be provided an instrument at school for use in rehearsals and lessons.
  • Students are not expected to bring their home instrument to school for rehearsals or lessons.

 *District 122 Bass Rental cost is $150 for the year that must be paid upfront.

Recommendation: Don't Buy, Rent!
I understand that there are lots of costs that come with having your child learn a musical instrument. You might be tempted to go on Amazon and purchase a cheap instrument ($50 for a violin? what a deal!). The reality is cheaper instruments are made poorly and will end up being difficult for your child to play/keep in tune, and be costly to replace or repair in the long run.

Materials/Supplies:

All students will need the following method book for orchestra this year:
 
Essential Elements for Strings - Book 1,

by Michael Allen, Robert Gillespie and Pamela Tellejohn Hayes.

Double-check and make sure you purchase the correct version for whichever instrument your child is playing. You can purchase this book at Quinlan and Fabish or online aswell. Ensure that your child has their book by the time we start our lessons the week of August 26th.
 
Along with the method book, students will also have the following supplies:
 
Violin and Violas:
  • A shoulder rest
  • Violin/Viola rosin
Cellos and Basses:
  • A Rock stop/Endpin stop
  • Cello/Bass rosin

Lessons:
Lessons will begin the week of August 26th.

Concert Dates:
Please mark your calendars now! Attendance at concerts is required.

Tuesday, October 29, 2019—Beginning Strings recitals at Liberty Jr. High, 6-8 p.m in half-hour time slots. (more info to come)
