1st Grade Curriculum Reading/Spelling/Language Arts: * Reading ~ Each week, students practice a new reading story. Students will learn about decoding, comprehension, reference, study skills, literature, vocabulary, and language skills. Students will also be reading "Good Fit" books during their Daily 5 reading time in both individual and group settings. * Phonics/Spelling ~ Students will learn about specific consonant and vowel patterns. Spelling words will be included in the Friday newsletters and students will be tested on them the following Friday. During the week, we will do many activities practicing how to spell the words. * Writing~ Students will work on writing a complete sentence and using proper capitalization and punctuation. As the year progresses, we will work on paragraph development and learn the difference between narrative, expository, and persuasive writing. Math: Our math program is called Every Day Math. Students will be studying number sense, addition and subtraction strategies to help master facts through 20, place value, measurement, time, interpreting data, and shapes. Throughout the year, you will receive Family Letters to keep you informed of the mathematical content that your child will be studying in each unit. Each letter includes a vocabulary list, suggested Do-Anytime Activities for you and your child, and an answer guide to selected Home Link (homework) activities. Home Links will come home at the end of every lesson. They are a great way to review with your child what was taught during Math that day. All Home Links also have a family note to explain any new math concepts taught. Social Studies: Our social studies series is by Pearson. We study maps, directions, the community, our country, and our world. The series places emphasis on geography, citizenship, and history. Science: We are addressing the NGSS (New Generation Science Standards). Some Topics we cover are Living and Nonliving Things, Life Cycles, Food Chains, Weather, Energy, and Engineering.
