2nd Grade Curriculum
Our Language Arts series is called Storytown. It includes the subject areas of Phonics, Reading, and English.
- Phonics Skills: In Phonics the students will learn about short and long vowels, r-controlled vowels, syllable patterns, consonant blends, digraphs, diphthongs, contractions, suffixes, prefixes, homonyms, antonyms, and synonyms.
- Reading: Students will be learning about different genres, comprehension skills and strategies, vocabulary, and study skills.
- English: Students will be learning about parts of speech and grammar rules. In addition we will cover three kinds of writing; narrative, expository, and persuasive.
We are following the Storytown spelling program. It will coincide with the phonics lessons each week. Students will also have the opportunity to apply their skills with challenge words. Spelling words will come home the first day of each week attached to the homework packet. Students will take a spelling test on Friday. This is the spelling grade that will be reflected on their report card. In addition to Storytown spelling, students will learn and practice the second grade core words. This is NOT reflected on their report card. It aims to prepare students for a lifetime of spelling in the real world-that is spelling correctly in writing.
Our Math program is called Everyday Math. Students will be studying whole number operations, time, money, place value, geometry, patterns and rules, fractions, and measurement. Throughout the year, you will receive family letters to keep you informed of the mathematical content that your child will be studying in each unit. Each letter includes a vocabulary list, suggested Do-Anytime Activities for you and your child, and an answer guide to Home Links (homework). Home Links will come home most weeknights and correspond to the lesson that was taught previously that day. They are a great way to review with your child what was taught during Math that day. All Home Links also have a family note to explain any new math algorithms taught in class.
Our handwriting program is called Handwriting Without Tears. Students will continue to practice their printing throughout the year. At the end of the year, students will be introduced to cursive writing.
Our Science series is by Scott Foresman. We will be supplementing our current curriculum with World in Motion to meet the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) standards. We study animals and plants, properties of matter, energy, forces and motion, and sound. This series gives students opportunities to learn through hands on experiments.
Our Social Studies series is by Pearson. We study geography skills, the fifty states, landforms, natural resources and many more fun things. This series places an emphasis on geography and history.
The purpose of homework is to promote responsibility and to review and reinforce class lessons. Several late homework assignments will result in a check mark on your child’s report card.
Home Links (Math Homework):
Home Links will start to come home after the first few weeks of school. For most weeks, look for Home Links to come home Monday through Thursday nights. Please have your child complete the Home Link and return it to school the following day.
