During the year in reading, students will work on fluency as well as comprehension skills. Some comprehension skills we will address are predicting, visualizing, sequencing, setting, author's purpose, character, cause and effect, fact and opinion, theme, reality vs. fantasy, compare and contrast, graphic sources, summarizing, context clues, drawing conclusions, and plot structure.
In phonics, the students will learn about short and long vowels, consonants, blends, digraphs, dipthongs, contractions, suffixes, prefixes, synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms.
Our spelling program is through Storytown. This follows along the Storytown reading series that we use. The spelling incorporates the phonics skills that the students learn each week.
We will be studying a variety of grammar topics during the year. Some of the skills we will work on are writing complete sentences, subjects and predicates, ending punctuation marks, nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, and commas. In addition, we will cover three kinds of writing; narrative, expository, and persuasive.
Our math program is called Everyday Math. Throughout the year, students will be working on whole number operations, patterns and rules, probability, place value, time, money, measurement, geometry, fractions, and problem solving.
