Students in the Specialized Instruction Program participate in a weekly social skills group. A variety of skills are taught and practiced during these groups including skills like sharing, taking turns, personal space, initiating and sustaining a conversation, perspective taking, expected and unexpected behaviors, and social problem solving. These skills are taught through explicit instruction using social stories, video modeling, role-playing, individual and group exercises, and repetitive practice and application of skills. Model Me Kids video modeling DVDs, Teach Town, Think Social!, We Beehave! social stories, and Safe and Caring Schools are some of the materials used to teach these skills.
