3rd Grade Curriculum
Social Studies – Our social studies program publisher is Pearson. The My World social studies program addresses the Common Core standards for English Language Arts. Some topics we study are: communities in the United States, civic ideals and practices, the beginning of our country, continuity and change, and global connections.
Science - We are addressing the NGSS (New Generation Science Standards). We will learn about the following topics: life cycles, fossils, variance of traits, climate and weather, biomes of the world, and forces of motion.
Handwriting – In the classroom we will practice the letters, analyze strokes, and practice alignment. We use the Handwriting Without Tears program.
Reading – Your student will be assigned a reading level. We will be reading from our district reading series, short stories, and chapter books. Your child will be learning and reinforcing phonics skills, decoding, vocabulary, language, comprehension, referencing, and study skills. Storytown comprehension and vocabulary tests will be given on Fridays, or on Thursdays when we have a Friday off.
**Fluency Practice - The students will bring home a fluency practice sheet each Monday. They will have already read this passage with a partner and marked how far they read in 1 minute. We will re-read this passage on Friday. The goal is to read at a minimum 10 words more in 1 minute than they did on Monday. Please practice this passage with your child throughout the week.
Spelling - The spelling words for the next week will be sent home on Friday. The test on those words will be the following Friday, or Thursday when we have a Friday off. Students have the challenge option to also spell the weekly vocabulary words in addition to the regular spelling words. This is completely up to the students and the results of the vocabulary words will not be entered into the gradebook.
Math – Our math program is Everyday Math 4. PLEASE review addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. These facts need to be automatic. Having them memorized will greatly benefit the students as they move on to 4th grade next year!
Writing – We will focus on expository, persuasive, and narrative paragraph writing. We will also be comparing/contrasting. The students will be answering comprehension questions in complete sentences. The students will keep a portfolio at school where most of their writing assignments and projects will be kept until the end of the year.
